Life’s Mysteries

I participate in a group called Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation, an organization and community focusing on contemplative spirituality. Along with their teachings, the group spends a great deal of time in contemplative prayer including intercessory prayer for others.  Richard Foster, in his book Prayer, defines intercession as “shifting our center of gravity from our own needs to the needs and concerns of others .” Our world today needs both of these approaches in a big way during our current season of transition from pandemic isolation to some degree of normality.

Shalem helped shape my faith.  About twenty years ago, I participated in two retreats focused on spiritual deepening.  The schedule included extended times of silence among fellow retreatants. I recently looked over some of the journal entries I made during  these week-long immersions and was reminded that I surprisingly penned this poem:

Mysteries

Mysteries never cease

Each day dawns,

God’s wonders spawned.

Our release.

Life’s questions told,

The answers elude.

God’s will ensures

Eternity unfolds.

Over the past couple years, in the midst of confusion, injustice , illness, and death, the answers to questions were often elusive.  Mysteries were presented.  Many of us prayed for our personal wellness and for others.

My grandkids and I listen to a beautiful and funny story almost every time I visit.  The story/song is called I Love My White Shoes and stars Pete the Cat, who tends to routinely get his beloved shoes dirty.  The story is by Eric Litwin.  The story behind the song is to be persistent when life presents surprises and perceived difficulties.  You can listen to the song by searching I Love My White Shoes at youtube.com.        Pete appreciates all challenges. I would suggest we follow Pete’s approach to life.  Then, toss in a little prayer that we accept our personal mysteries as a teaching and continue to pray for God’s gracious presence for others who suffer.
